Humble Hull, at your service!
Here at Licklist, we not only strive to bring you the latest and greatest events happening across the country, but also to unearth hidden gems in some of the land’s most beautiful cities. With all that in mind, we’ve set the city of Hull in our sights to give you the guide to a stellar night out. Aside from having the biggest suspension bridge in the world, Hull has a wealth of bars, clubs and venues waiting to be explored.
With the increasingly popular University of Hull sitting just a half hour walk away from the city centre, weekday nights in Hull are just as busy and vibrant as the weekends. Twenty five thousand students descend upon the city each September, most with a hefty student loan and a newfound sense of freedom, creating a hectic schedule of weekly events and club nights across the city. What better place to start then the infamous Asylum, student union and epic venue. The £3.6 million development and winner of BEDA student nightclub of the year award, the Asylum offers a whole host of regular events including the city’s longest running student night, ‘The Tower’. Taking place every Wednesday night with a different theme each week, ‘The Tower’ provides a weekly fix of commercial tunes in the main room and something a bit different in the Karaoke room. Saturday sees ‘Brassick’ take place, mixing commercial house and chart with DnB and house. Fully loaded with a top-of-the-range sound system and £1.75 for all drinks, Asylum easily makes it onto the list.
Welly and Pozition have proven to be popular amongst Hull’s students, with a packed weekly schedule of nights. Thursday’s established club night ‘Jelly at Welly’ serves up every genre you could want on a weekday night, including Disco, Funk, Rock, and Indie. With live events, such as dub king David Rodigan, it’s no surprise Welly always attracts a big crowd. Boasting six bars, a roof garden, a cafe bar, a capacity of 1,350 and a closing time of 5am on a Saturday, Pozition are a big player on the nightlife scene. For students, with drinks starting from £1, the Big Student Social on Thursdays is always a good shout. For those of us not fortunate enough to be able to watch Countdown every day, have no fear, ‘Freshly Squeezed’ every Saturday will take care of all your weekend party needs. For all students looking to brush off those weekend blues, ‘Epik!’ at The Sugar Mill will quickly sort them out. With cheap drinks across the board and three rooms, each with their own vibe, what better way is there to start off your week?
If you're not looking for a big night out on the town, Hull’s Princess Avenue is the place to be. You’re spoilt for choice here. A simple stroll down the avenue provides loads of different bars, each offering something special.
Promoters across Hull are cashing in on the new wave of House acts breaking into the public musical sphere. Having celebrated their 21st anniversary last year, promoters Deja Vu consistently bring some of the biggest names from around the world to Hull. Upcoming events include a marathon twelve-hour party at the Student Union with Darius Syrossian, Richy Ahmed and Waze & Odyssey all on the decks!
