Why Ibiza is still number one
For a long time Ibiza was considered the paramount clubbing location on the planet. The Beatles of clubbing. The Google of clubbing… The William Shakespeare of clubbing. Alas, those absurd titles that we just made up are in jeopardy due to increasing rises in new clubbing havens such as Croatia and renowned festivals such as the Electric Daisy Carnival. We thought we’d compile a little list to let you know why Ibiza hasn’t lost its metaphorical clubbing crown just yet.
The Best DJs: More so than anywhere else in the world, Ibiza still has the ability to pull in the cream of the crop in EDM talent. For example, just look at some of the nights on offer in the next couple of weeks- Rudimental and Andy C @ Amnesia on the 4th August, Simian Mobile Disco @ DC-10 on the 7th, Chase and Status, Sub Focus and Netsky @ Amnesia on the 11th, Fatboy Slim @ Space on the 14th and Avicii @ Ushuaia on the 16th. If that isn’t enough to fill your proverbial boots then you mustn’t be wearing any…
The Best Clubs: You couldn’t really lure the best DJs to play without the best clubs could you? I mean, Guetta isn’t going to play the function room of a pub, next to the pool table is he? Here are some of the top clubs to check out in Ibiza… Amnesia- A heady mix of techno, house, trance and dubstep is on offer at Amnesia, which has become one of the quintessential places to party in Ibiza. Located in San Rafael with a 5000 capacity, Amnesia is worth a visit not only for the DJs but also for the history. Amnesia is hallowed turf having opened in 1976. Space- Space is basically the definition of a superclub. The club boasts five different areas, 3 of which are partially outdoor (gotta take advantage of that Baleraric heat haven’t you?) and a capacity of FIFTEEN THOUSAND. Pacha- You’ve undoubtedly at some point seen the iconic cherry logo that has now become synonymous with Ibiza dance culture. Open since 1973 and still as popular as ever with current nights like ‘F**K Me I’m Famous’ and ‘Flower Power’ Pacha is a must go. Sankeys- Born in Manchester and now making waves on shores of Ibiza (get it?), Sankeys is a minimalist, 1500 capacity club renowned for playing the freshest underground electronic and house music.
The Best Bars: Clubs are nice and all but sometimes it can be a bit annoying having to make your way to the bar by pushing through 5000 other people. Fortunately Ibiza has some great bars and unlike the clubs you wont have to pay eighteen euros for a pint. Highlights include Tantra, which is only around 100 metres from Space and is the host of many popular pre-club parties. Itaca is also worth a visit, it has become one of the most popular bars in San Antonio and is renowned for it’s focus on deep house and even live sessions from saxophonists, percussionists and dancers. Another bar port of call is Linekers, the venue is situated 10 steps from the beach and is popular for its resident DJs, good food and the chance to catch some sport on the big screens. With the football season fast approaching this may be a big plus for many. Football and pre-drinks in the sun, what could go wrong?
Ibiza Rocks: Ibiza is often lauded for its stellar clubbing scene and big name DJs but the Ibiza Rocks hotel in San Antonio has proven that the Island can put on a hell of a live gig too. Celebrating it’s tenth anniversary this summer the now legendary hotel/gig venue has already had the likes of Catfish and The Bottlemen, Rudimental and The Libertines grace the stage but fear not, there is still plenty to enjoy before the summer is out. Some massive acts still set to appear include the refreshingly innovative electro-classical Clean Bandit on the 5th August and jack of all trades Mark Ronson on the 9th of September. Saving the best till last, The Courteeners will be performing at a massive closing party on the 16th September. Fresh off the buzz of selling out the 25,000 capacity Heaton Park, the Machester quartet will surely bring the Ibiza season to a fitting end that’ll have beers in the air, massive sing-alongs and everyone maniacally pogoing.
