TOM BROWNE

Tom Browne (born October 30, 1954, Queens, New York), commonly referred to as "Mr. Jamaica Funk", is a jazz trumpeter who rose to prominence first through his early work with Sonny Fortune and for his #1 charting 1980 single "Funkin' For Jamaica (N.Y)" and notable dance tracks like "Thighs High".

Browne originally played piano, having taken lessons from the age of 11. Turning to the trumpet, inspired by his collection of jazz albums, his first gig was in a Queens club, The Village Door. In 1975, he landed his first professional gig with Weldon Irvine.

From here he played with Sonny Fortune and Lonnie Smith and was later introduced to Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen at GRP Records via Earl Klugh. Grusin and Rosen signed him to GRP (via Arista Records) and Browne broke onto the music scene in 1979 with a highly acclaimed instrumental jazz fusion album "Browne Sugar", although this was not released in the UK. His first real breakthrough came in 1980 with the release of "Funkin' For Jamaica", taken from his second album "Love Approach. The single hit #1 on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles for 4 weeks, and was also a UK Top 10 hit, and featured the lead vocals of Tonni Smith.

He has also recorded with the likes of Roy Ayers, Siedah Garrett and some true greats of classic / modern Jazz funk music - as well as releasing numerous critically acclaimed albums over the decades + we are truly honoured & can't wait to welcome him to The CLF Art Cafe Stage.

Then on the 1s and 2s [and as always] prepare to be shaken and very, very stirred as guest host DJs from The simply outstanding, eclectic, funked up record label WAH WAH 45s take you on a good time safari in search of the perfect groove, beat and positive vibration. Strictly on the good foot! Absolutely Positively Storming!

WAH WAH 45s

Wah Wah came about as the brainchild of the late, great Simon Goss and his brother Chris, alongside DJ Billy Whizz and later Oscar Goldenchild, kicking off in London in the early 90s with the first proper Wah Wah session at The Old Albany (where the Chemical Brothers started their careers too!).

After some serious underground parties, the sessions impressed the Jazz Cafe’s Adrian Gibson so much that he headhunted Simon and Chris to run the venue’s Friday night sessions, playing host to Gil Scott-Heron, Common and Pharoah Saunders to name but a few. In 1999, Simon and Chris enticed Mouseorgan’s Dom Servini to join them on their mission. Due to Chris’ pivotal role at Hospital records, his involvement in Wah Wah became less pronounced, leaving Simon and Dom to run most of the club sessions and the record label alike.

After Simon’s sad passing in January of 2010, it’s been left to Dom and Wah Wah recording artist Adam Scrimshire to fly the flag and take the label to the next level in Simon’s memory. Now joined by young buck, Bopperson, the trio are unleashing releases from artists as diverse as Hackney Colliery Band, Lea Lea, Bev Lee Harling, Paper Tiger, Resonators and many more.

The label’s parties, live shows and club nights are legendary – from the Scala and Oval Space in London, to sessions across the globe, the Wah Wah word is spreading – make sure you don’t miss out!

Nuff said!

As always expect the absolute finest in funk & the rarest in groove as hosts + guest Djs and bands get deep, up close and personal with their own collections and arrangements of original deep dancefloor monsters. Then to now.
