About Formation Movement

Formation is a new dance and fitness collective that are passionate about the dance and music culture of the African Diaspora.

FORMATION stems from a desire to offer a world-class range and variety of classes and fitness options grounded in the music we love and support. At the core of our ethos is motivation, community and support for everybody, especially those who feel missed out or ignored by mainstream fitness and the way it is marketed.

Formation provides, welcoming, uplifting and inclusive environments in which young and old alike can gain body confidence and increase health awareness.

Formation is also passionate about creative education and the role of the arts in the development and growth of young people.

As an organization we do three things:

Provide cutting edge dance and dance technique classes that pass on the legacy and knowledge be it, Afrodance, Soca, Dancehall, Street or Contemporary Urban dance.

Provide movement and fitness classes that draw upon the rich legacy of British Urban Music. Our classes draw on moves to the beat of Ska, Soca, Reggae, Gospel, Bashment, Drum’n’Bass, Jungle and Grime. We offer a wide range of classes from contemporary HIIT, and fast-paced Aerobic work-outs to gentler Pilates and Yoga based classes.

Curate a programme of talks and discussions that record the heritage of these music and dance styles and scenes for future generations.

We collaborate with a range of venues which champion the arts and community. Our core base is Bold Tendencies a not -for-profit creative enterprise and arts organisation located on the disused top four floors of the municipal car park in Peckham South London.
