Where did The Rasmus disappear to? This question has been on the minds of fans who love dark, epic and melodic rock all over the world. It’s understandable why people might ask that question when you take into consideration that The Rasmus are one of Finland’s biggest music exports ever.

And those fans are more than numerous: The Rasmus have almost a million Facebook friends, whilst on Spotify the band’s catchy songs have gathered tens and tens of millions of plays. The Rasmus’ single and album physical sales are also very impressive: their breakthrough single ‘In The Shadows’ and its accompanying long player Dead Letters (2003) can be found in over one and a half million households.

The Rasmus, in fact, have not disappeared anywhere, even though it’s been awhile since their last album The Rasmus appeared in 2012.

During 2013 through 2016, they did tours in Russia, Ukraine, the UK, Switzerland, Finland, Mexico, Peru and Argentina.

“It was mind blowing to play to our South American fans.” singer Lauri Ylönen tells us.

“The Latin American tour had a nice side to it by giving us a lot of extra enthusiasm to write new music - even though that song writing enthusiasm had been very strong before those dates.”

The band members Lauri Ylönen, Pauli Rantasalmi, Eero Heinonen and Aki Hakala also took some time to try to catch up with their lives. Since the last album, Lauri moved to Los Angeles, a change that resonates in many of the songs he has written since. Both Lauri and Pauli also had the added burden of going through divorces, which have influenced many of the themes found within the new material.

“The lyrics are very varied, as they reflect issues we’ve faced from these past years – from those sweeter experiences to darker feelings. A couple of songs on the other hand observe the world through a childlike and more imaginative lens.”

Excited fans will get the chance to dive into The Rasmus’ world of new tricks this coming October 2017, when the band’s long anticipated new album will be released. That new record contains fresh, contemporary sounds as well as those more typical darker tones, as exemplified on the first taste of the forthcoming album, ‘Paradise’.

‘Paradise’ was recorded and mixed in Stockholm, produced by the very successful Swedish team The Family. “Paradise is a relative thing”, Lauri says, “One man’s hell can be another man’s paradise”.

“The thinking behind our new songs was to create the kind of music we would like to listen to. We haven't abandoned our signature northern melancholy but you can hear a wide range of influences in our new compositions. The new album is like a rollercoaster with many different emotions and personal feelings. Our music is at times dark, speculative, melodic and sometimes even sad” Ylönen explains.

Despite all the new innovations, The Rasmus don’t deviate so much from the familiar sound so welcomed and loved by their fans. In another sense, the Finnish band has returned home, “This felt like the right time to combine our strengths with the Playground Music company. Playground released our biggest hits back in the day and we conquered the world with them in the past, so our expectations for this new record are high.”

The Rasmus’ new album also means one thing that will cheer up their fans: a long world tour. “We are planning tours for 2017 and 2018 in most parts of the world, starting in November with Europe.” Ylönen tells us.
