About this Event

On 28th July 2017 Akala will release the highly anticipated ‘VISIONS’, a Comic Book EP. This project is a first for Akala and a first in Hip Hop as he tackles the book’s message and themes in musical form, pushing the boundaries of art and music.

Speaking of the book, when previewed at MCM Comic Con in London last October, he said:

“Visions is a semi-autobiographical magical realist story which forms part of a new comic book series, written entirely in verse. This all-encompassing multi-media historical tale explores higher states of consciousness, charting the evolution of the art of rapping from West Africa’s Griot traditions, through Jazz, Blues and Reggae up to the modern day.”

With deeply stirring soundscapes and hard-hitting beats produced by James Leggett (aka Nearly Native) and Akala with additional production from his long time collaborator Lavar Bullard, the Visions EP sets Akala’s visceral trademark flow to moody strings and timeless rhythms, breaking new ground for his unique approach to Hip Hop: theatrical long-form storytelling - a signpost to where Akala is taking the hip hop genre.

Visions will be released on all digital platforms on the 28th July 2017, one week after its world premiere on Charlie Sloth’s internationally renowned BBC ‘Radio 1’ rap show. This will be hotly followed by a string of summer festivals and a UK tour where fans and newcomers alike will be treated to the full live performance / visual presentation of the ‘Visions’ Comic Book EP as well as songs from his decade-spanning back catalogue this Winter.
